Wed. 05 May - Day Hike. Mine Hill and Carter Preserves, Roxbury. 6-6.5 miles. Take a self-guided tour of 19th cent. iron mine and furnace complex, hike by old mine tunnels and air shafts (now bat hibernacula), by abandoned quarries and along the Shepaug River. Level: moderate. Sat. 08 May -CT Section Picnic and Annual Meeting. Hammonasset State Park in Madison, CT, at Picnic Pavilion #4, a covered pavilion near the Meigs Point Nature Center which is further from the beaches and from most of the crowds. It has at least 10 large picnic tables, four open sides, and plenty of surrounding grassy area. Upon entering Hammonasset, follow the signs along the main road toward Meigs Point. Once past the nature center buildings, turn left into the parking lots. Bring chairs if you would feel more comfortable sitting outside the pavilion. Starting about 5:00 pm. The annual meeting will commence around 6:00 pm. Bring your own picnic. No reservations required but please contact Dennis Himes, dennis@cookhimes.us or 860-454-8301, if you plan to join us.

Wed. 2 June. Day Hike. Mattabesett-Mt. Pisgah-Mica Ledges loop, Durham & Madison. 8.6 miles. Geologically interesting terrain with great views. The first 1 1/2 miles are part of a recent Mattabesett Trail relocation. Of interest: Pyramid Rock, Selectman's Stones (boundary of three towns), Mica Ledges ravine. Level: Moderate, with rock scrambles and a few steep sections. A good conditioning hike. Pace: Moderate (4+ hours). Steady rain cancels. Wed. 9 June. Day Hike/Bird Walk. Bent of the River Audubon Center, Southbury. Ca. 6 miles. Hike some of the 15 miles of trails at this stunning 700-acre National Audubon property on the Atlantic Flyway. Of interest: old meadow habitat, Eagle Overlook, bluebird and martin houses, river habitat frequented by muskrat, beaver, otters, and eagles (wildlife sightings not guaranteed). Level: Easy to Moderate (a couple of steep sections and one optional rock scramble). Pace: Moderate to Leisurely (will stop for birds). Steady rain cancels.
